Sylvia Mentecki for Board Member District 2
Our Community, Our Kids

Welcome to Sylvia Mentecki for Board of Education- District 2 Anne Arundel County

This is not an easy decision for me. My family, my friends and supporters, have given a great deal to get me to this point. If this were only about me, I might go on. But I entered into being elected for the School Board position because I love my community, and because I care about our children. I feel I must now stand aside and withdraw from the campaign.

I have spent the last few weeks immersed into reviewing the previous board meetings, the MTG Study, Transportation Study, Budget presentations, school start times & and the Kirwan Commission project as well coordinating and executing an effective campaign. I have found along with all of this, and getting up to speed on these items and reviewing the Board Member Handbook responsibilities, that with my current fulltime job, part time job, college, family and community commitments I would find it difficult to manage my time and give 100% to all. I would not want to go in giving any less than 100% and would strive to give even more. There simply is not enough hours in the day for me to give this the dedication it truly deserves.

Withdrawing from this campaign was an extremely difficult decision to come to, but is the lesser of two evils. To recognize that the greatest error is not to have tried and failed, but that in trying, we did not give it our best effort. There is no such thing as good enough.

We need the courage to START and CONTINUE what we should do, and the courage to STOP what we shouldn't do. Public service is often challenging and requires personal sacrifice. We all have a responsibility to do our part to help our communities, to reach out to others in need, to lift them up and to help them succeed. When we do this, we strengthen the fabric of our nation, and we ensure the future of our children.

Perhaps, in the future, when I am finished with college and the part time job, if the need still existed and you would still support me, I could try again. Unfortunately, at this time it just wasn’t meant to be. I sincerely appreciate all the support, encouragement and words of wisdom I have received along this brief journey. I am sure I will speak with most of you as I continue working with the community.
